The short version
Every pallet of sod we sell covers 450 square feet, and as of October 2026 a pallet runs $269 to $513 depending on the grass. Bermuda and St. Augustine sit mostly in the $269 to $390 range. Zoysia is the premium pick at $456 to $513. If you only need a patch, you don't need a whole pallet: Tifway 419 Bermuda is also sold by the square yard.

How many pallets you need
One pallet is 450 square feet, which is 50 square yards. Take your lawn area, divide by 450, and round up. Always round up. We sell sod by the whole pallet, and a strip short at the end of install day is a real headache.
| Lawn area | Math | Pallets to order |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 sq ft | 1,000 ÷ 450 = 2.2 | 3 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 2,500 ÷ 450 = 5.6 | 6 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 5,000 ÷ 450 = 11.1 | 12 |
| 6,200 sq ft | 6,200 ÷ 450 = 13.8 | 14 |
| 10,000 sq ft | 10,000 ÷ 450 = 22.2 | 23 |
| One acre (43,560 sq ft) | 43,560 ÷ 450 = 96.8 | 97 |
Worked example: say you've got 6,200 square feet of lawn and you want Raleigh St. Augustine. That's 14 pallets at $325, or $4,550 in sod, plus delivery for your zone.
An acre is a big job. 97 pallets is a lot of grass to lay before it dries out, so plan your crew and your watering before the truck shows up. If you're a contractor doing this kind of volume, open an account. You get Net-30 after a credit check and volume pricing by the load.
Buying just enough for a patch
This is the question we get most from folks with a dead spot by the AC unit or where the dog runs the fence. You don't have to buy a full pallet. Tifway 419 Bermuda by the square yard is $11.05 per square yard as of October 2026. One square yard is 9 square feet, a 3 foot by 3 foot square.
Say your bare patch is 10 feet by 12 feet. That's 120 square feet. Divide by 9 and you get 13.3, so order 14 square yards. That's $154.70 in sod.
Here's where the line falls. A full Tifway 419 pallet is $323. At $11.05 a yard, you hit that number at about 29 square yards, which is roughly 260 square feet. Under that, buy by the yard. Over that, the pallet is cheaper and you'll have some left for the next bad spot.
One catch: per-yard sod is Tifway 419 only. If your yard is St. Augustine or Zoysia, a Bermuda patch is going to stand out and creep into the rest of your lawn. In that case you'd want a pallet of the matching grass.
Mistakes we see people make
- Measuring the lot instead of the lawn. Subtract the driveway, beds, walkways, the patio and the AC pad. People over-order all the time because they forget the back beds.
- Ordering the day before. Sod is cut fresh at our partner farms, so we need 24 to 48 hours notice. Plan your install day first, then order.
- No water plan. New sod needs a lot of water the first couple weeks. Have your sprinklers or hose timers ready before the pallets land.
- Laying sod on bare clay. Spread a couple inches of Premium Soil Mix and rake it smooth first. Our topsoil guide has the math.
- Not thinking about the truck. Make sure the truck can reach where you want the pallets. If you're not sure, we can drop curbside. Gate codes and HOA notes go in the special instructions at checkout.
