The short version
Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. A 4 × 8 ft raised bed (32 sq ft) filled 12 inches deep takes 1.19 cubic yards, or 1.33 with the calculator's 12% overage. Bulk soil and compost are sold by the cubic yard.
Soil coverage by depth
| Depth | Cubic yards per 100 sq ft | Sq ft one cubic yard of soil covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 in | 0.31 | 324 |
| 2 in | 0.62 | 162 |
| 4 in | 1.23 | 81 |
| 6 in | 1.85 | 54 |
| 12 in | 3.70 | 27 |
How deep to fill
- Raised beds: 6 to 12 inches, deeper for root crops.
- New planting: 4 to 6 inches.
- Lawn top-dressing: 1 to 2 inches.
- Bulk soil settles 10 to 20% after the first watering. Go above the 12% overage line for very fluffy compost.
