What it is
A sand-heavy soil blend — roughly 70% sand, 30% screened topsoil. Sold by the cubic yard. The lawn-repair specialist soil: drains fast, settles flat, perfect for leveling work.
What it is for
- Lawn leveling. Filling low spots, repair after sprinkler line replacement, smoothing out the bumps that develop in older lawns.
- Top-dressing Bermuda and Zoysia. Spread 1/4" over the lawn after core-aeration to fill the holes and build a smoother surface over time.
- Sprinkler-trench backfill. Drains better than topsoil — water doesn't pond in the trench during heavy rain.
- Sod-prep for compacted soil. Light layer worked into hardpan to improve initial drainage and root penetration.
- Building up base for ground-level patio installations. Where the patio sits directly on graded soil (no compacted base).
Not for planting beds — too sandy to support most plants. For productive beds, use Premium Soil Mix or Bella Flora.
How much do I need
| Application | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Lawn top-dress (1/4") | ~1,300 sq ft per yard |
| Lawn low-spot fill (2") | ~150 sq ft per yard |
| Sprinkler-trench backfill | ~1 yard per 100 LF of trench |
| Sod prep (1" tilled in) | ~300 sq ft per yard |
How to use it for lawn leveling
- Core-aerate the lawn (rent from a rental yard, or hire it done).
- Spread Sandy Soil Mix at 1/4" over the entire lawn or just the low areas.
- Drag with a steel mat or rake to work the mix into the aeration holes and level out high spots.
- Water deeply to settle.
- Reapply in 2-3 weeks if larger leveling is needed.
Multiple thin applications work better than one thick application — sand more than 1/2" thick at once can smother the grass.
Sandy Soil Mix vs Premium Soil Mix vs USGA Sand
| Sandy Soil Mix | Premium Soil Mix | USGA Sand | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition | Sand-heavy blend | Soil with organic matter | Pure fine sand |
| Drains | Fast | Moderate | Fastest |
| Holds nutrients | Modest | Good | Poor |
| Best for | Lawn repair, leveling | Beds, sod prep | Bunkers, premium top-dress |
| Cost | Lowest | Lower | Highest |
For typical residential lawn leveling, Sandy Soil Mix is the sweet spot — better than pure sand (has some soil to bind it), cheaper than USGA Sand.
Buying tips
- Apply on a dry day. Wet sandy soil is sticky and hard to spread.
- For small repairs, half a yard is plenty.
- Top-dress in spring or fall — not in mid-summer heat or before a freeze.
Contractor notes
Moderate-volume product. Volume pricing at 5+ yards.
