What it is

A planting soil blend amended with lava sand — porous volcanic mineral aggregate. Sold by the cubic yard. The cult-favorite soil for xeriscape and drought-tolerant Texas plantings.

What it is for

Drought-tolerant beds and native plantings where the goal is "establish and forget":

  • Xeriscape beds. Agave, yucca, sotol, salvia greggii, lantana, native grasses — all thrive in lava-sand-amended soil.
  • Native plant beds. Texas natives prefer well-drained, mineral-heavy soils. Lava Sand Mix replicates the native soil structure.
  • Mediterranean herb beds. Rosemary, thyme, lavender, sage — none tolerate the heavy clay of native DFW soil. Lava sand mix is the solution.
  • Cactus and succulent gardens. Drainage is critical; lava sand mix delivers.
  • Slope plantings. Where standard soil washes out, lava-sand-amended soil holds shape better.

For productive beds (vegetables, cut flowers, hungry annuals), use Premium Soil Mix or Bella Flora instead — lava sand mix is too lean for high-feed crops.

What lava sand does

Three properties of lava sand make it work for drought-tolerant plantings:

  1. Porous structure. Holds water in tiny pores, releases it slowly to roots. Plants get steadier moisture even with infrequent watering.
  2. Mineral content. Slow-release trace minerals (silicon, magnesium, iron) that drought-tolerant natives need.
  3. Aeration. Doesn't compact like clay-heavy soils. Roots grow freely.

People who use it swear by it. The benefit shows up most in the second and third year, when xeriscape plants have established and are pulling minerals out of the soil structure.

How much do I need

Same coverage math as other planting soils:

Bed area Yards needed
100 sq ft at 6" deep 2
200 sq ft at 6" deep 4
400 sq ft at 6" deep 7.5

For amending existing beds rather than full replacement, mix 30-50% lava sand mix with existing soil — work into the top 6 inches.

Texas/DFW specific

In our climate:

  • Lava sand mix performs especially well in the second year of a 1-year-old install, when xeriscape plants have established deeper root structure.
  • Drainage is excellent in the heavy rains DFW gets in May/October.
  • Plants in lava sand mix typically need 30-40% less irrigation than the same plants in standard soil.

Buying tips

  • Best for plantings that match its strengths — drought-tolerant, native, mineral-loving. Don't use as a general-purpose bed soil.
  • Often paired with decomposed granite as a top-dress (xeriscape combo) rather than mulch.
  • Cult product. Smaller orders are common. Half-yard minimums available.
