What it is

Composted herbivore manure from the Fort Worth Zoo — elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, and other zoo herbivores. Hot-composted, screened, ready to use. Sold by the cubic yard. The cult-favorite compost amendment of north Texas gardeners.

What it is for

Same uses as standard Enriched Organic Compost, but with a richer nutrient profile:

  • Top-dress for vegetable beds — produces visibly stronger plants than standard compost in side-by-side comparisons.
  • Tree and shrub planting amendment — slower-release nutrients than typical compost.
  • Raised-bed amendment — mix 20-25% into Bella Flora for premium vegetable production.
  • Show-garden top-dress — the difference in plant vigor is visible.

What makes it different from standard compost

Three reasons gardeners pay the upcharge:

  1. Diverse manure inputs. Elephant + giraffe + zebra + rhino + other herbivore mix yields a more complete trace-mineral profile than typical cow-manure compost.
  2. Plant-diversity inputs. Zoo animals eat a wider variety of plants than livestock — more complex micronutrient profile in the resulting compost.
  3. Slower nutrient release. The elephant gut, in particular, breaks plant material down more slowly than a cow's — outputs are coarser-textured compost that releases over a longer time.

The result: plants grown in Zoo Poo amended soil typically show stronger color, denser foliage, and higher yields than the same plants in standard-compost beds.

How much do I need

Same coverage as standard compost:

Application Coverage
Bed top-dress (1") ~325 sq ft per yard
Raised-bed amendment 25% of total mix volume
Tree planting ~0.2 yd per medium tree pit

Zoo Poo vs standard compost

Zoo Poo Enriched Organic Compost
Source Fort Worth Zoo herbivores Yard waste, livestock manure, food waste
Cost per yard Higher Lower
Nutrient diversity Higher Good
Texture Slightly coarser Fine
Best for Premium amendment All-purpose amendment

For everyday compost use, standard compost is more cost-effective. For show gardens, premium vegetable production, or trying-something-different, Zoo Poo earns the upcharge.

Buying tips

  • Limited supply. Zoo produces a fixed amount per month. Call before showing up to confirm stock.
  • Apply lightly. Half-inch top-dress for premium amendment is enough.
  • Don't fill beds with pure Zoo Poo. Too rich. 25% maximum in any soil mix.

Texas/DFW specific

Zoo Poo is a north Texas specialty product — most other regions don't have access to zoo-sourced compost. Cult following among Fort Worth and Dallas master gardeners. If you're visiting from out of state, this is a "local source only" product.
