What it is
Tifway 419 hybrid Bermuda sod, cut to order by the square yard (9 sq ft per piece). For when a full pallet (450 sq ft) is way more than you need.
When per-square-yard makes sense
- Patch jobs. Bare spot from a swing set, dog wear, tree removal — buy 2-5 sq yds, patch it, done.
- Sprinkler-trench repair. Last spring's irrigation work left a 2-foot strip of dirt. 2 sq yds covers it.
- Filling in along a new bed expansion. Pulled out a bed, want grass back — order the exact yardage.
- Garden installs under 100 sq ft. A new tree well, a small ornamental area, a side path edge.
If you need more than 50 sq yds (450 sq ft), the full pallet is cheaper per sq ft.
How much do I need
| Patch / area | Sq yards needed |
|---|---|
| 4x4 ft bare spot (16 sq ft) | 2 |
| 4x8 ft strip (32 sq ft) | 4 |
| 6x10 ft area (60 sq ft) | 7 |
| 10x10 ft area (100 sq ft) | 12 |
Add one extra sq yd for cut waste around obstacles.
Install (small patch)
- Kill or scrape any existing turf in the patch area. Don't sod over live grass.
- Loosen the top 2-3 inches of soil with a garden fork.
- Add a half-inch of Premium Soil Mix to the patch area. Levels and gives roots a head start.
- Lay the sod squares with tight seams to existing grass and to each other.
- Press down with your hands or by walking on a board across the patch.
- Water immediately — soak the patch and the surrounding inch of established grass.
- Water daily for 7 days, then transition to your normal schedule.
The patch will be visible (slightly different shade) for 4-6 weeks while it integrates. By late summer you won't see the seam.
Buying tips
- Sold by the square yard — pick up only, no minimum.
- Cut fresh same-day if you call ahead by 10am. Otherwise pulled from current week's pallet supply.
- For patches in shade, Tifway 419 will struggle — use Palisades Zoysia per sq yd ordered by the patch instead.
- Don't leave cut sod in the sun more than a few hours before laying. The roots dry out fast.
Contractor notes
Per-sq-yd cuts available same-day on existing pallet stock. For special varieties (Zoysia, St. Augustine) by the sq yard, call ahead.
