The short version
The best driveway gravel in North Texas is angular crushed rock with fines in it, laid as 6 inches of compacted base with a 2-inch crushed top coat. For most homeowners that's our 1" crushed limestone, which runs $28 a ton as of October 2026. Bigger rock isn't better on top. Round rock like pea gravel or river rock is the wrong pick for anything a car drives on.
Why angular rock with fines wins
Here's what we tell people on the phone. A driveway holds up because the rock locks together. Crushed stone has sharp, broken faces, and the small dust and chips in it (the "fines") fill the gaps. You wet it, you compact it, and it sets up almost like a hard road.
Round stone can't do that. Every piece is a little ball bearing. Tires push it around, it piles up on the edges, and you get bare ruts down the middle.
So when someone asks "3/4 inch or something bigger, like 1 to 2 inch?" our answer is: the size matters less than the shape. A crushed 1" or 1.5" minus product that packs is what you want. A 1" to 3" round cobble will never make a driveway, no matter how deep you pile it.
Base layer vs top layer
Think of it as two jobs.
The base carries the weight. It's the 6 inches (8 if you park trucks or trailers) that spreads the wheel load out before it hits our soft DFW clay. It needs fines so it compacts.
The top coat is what you see and drive on. About 2 inches. It should still pack, but it can be the "finished look" layer.
Here's how our driveway rock lines up:
| Product | Sold by | Price (Oct 2026) | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1" Crushed Limestone | ton | $28 | Base or top. The standard driveway rock. |
| Utility Rock, 3/4" | ton | $38 | Lower base course, drains well |
| Road Base, 1.5" Minus | cubic yard | $75 | Base. Crushed rock and fines, compacts hard |
| Crushed Concrete Flex Base, 1.5" Minus | cubic yard | $28 | Base. Recycled, TxDOT Item 247 Type D |
| Pea Gravel, 5/16" | ton | $68 | Not a driveway rock. Thin decorative top only |
Prices change, so check each product page for the live number.
Watch the "Sold by" column. Some of our rock sells per ton and some sells per cubic yard, and you can't compare them straight across. Road base and crushed concrete flex base are priced by the yard, so order those by the cubic yard figure. The limestone, utility rock and pea gravel are priced by the ton.
A few combos that work:
- All limestone. 6" of 1" crushed limestone base, 2" more on top. Simple, and it's what most people do.
- Budget base. 4" of 3/4" utility rock, then 2" of 1" crushed limestone over it. Same structural job.
- Flex base under limestone. Crushed concrete flex base or road base for the 6" base, then a 1" crushed limestone or decomposed granite top coat.
How deep and how many tons
We're not going to redo all the math here. It's in how to size a gravel driveway. Here are the numbers from that post:
- 6 inches of compacted base plus a 2-inch top coat
- Roughly 1 ton per 25 sq ft of driveway, total
- A 12 ft × 60 ft driveway (720 sq ft) takes about 28 to 30 tons: around 20 tons of base and 6 tons of top
- 1" crushed limestone weighs about 1.5 tons per cubic yard
- Order a little extra, because compacting it loses volume
Quick worked example on that same 720 sq ft drive, base only:
- 1" crushed limestone: about 20 tons × $28 = $560
- Crushed concrete flex base: 720 × 6 ÷ 324 = 13.3 cubic yards, call it 14 yards × $28 = $392
- Road base: 14 yards × $75 = $1,050
Then add the top coat. About 6 tons of 1" crushed limestone is $168. Those are material prices only. Delivery is extra and shows in full at checkout.
Why not pea gravel or river rock
Pea gravel is great for a path or a dog run. On a driveway it spins out under tires, it migrates into the lawn, and it never firms up. If you love the look, put it on as a thin layer over a locked crushed base, and know you'll be raking it back.
River rock is the same story but worse. The Brazos River Rock, 1" to 3" people ask about is round. It's for beds and drainage, not wheels.
Common mistakes
- Dumping rock on bare clay. No base, no driveway. It ruts and sinks within a season.
- Skipping fabric. Woven fabric between the dirt and the base keeps clay from pumping up into your rock. The 6' × 300' Pro Landscape Fabric covers 1,800 sq ft, so you get fewer seams.
- No edging and no crown. Give it a slight crown so water sheets off the sides. Run steel edging along the lawn so the rock stays put.
- Comparing a per-ton price to a per-yard price. They aren't the same unit. Price out the actual job.
What to do next
A full driveway is a lot of tonnage, so the easiest move is to request a driveway quote. We'll spec the base, top coat and fabric for your address and figure out how many truckloads it takes. For a short apron or patch, use the rock calculator and order from rock and gravel. Ordered by 10:00 AM, in-stock rock can go out same day. Not sure if we reach you?
