What it is
Recycled crushed concrete, graded 1.5 inch minus with a full range of sizes down to fines. Sold by the cubic yard. Our supplier makes it to the Texas Department of Transportation Item 247 specification for Type D flexible base. In north Texas it goes by several names: crushed concrete, flex base, recycled base or road base.
The mix of large pieces and fines is what makes it work. It compacts into a hard, stable layer.
What it is for
- Driveway and parking base. Under a finish layer, or as the driving surface on a rural drive.
- Pads. Under sheds, carports, hot tubs and equipment.
- Patio and paver base. Compacted under flagstone or pavers.
- Road and lot base on job sites.
For a cleaner white finish layer, top with 1" crushed limestone. For a virgin rock base, see Road Base.
How much to order
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 324.
| Project | Depth | One yard covers |
|---|---|---|
| Walkway or patio base | 4 in | about 81 sq ft |
| Driveway or pad base | 6 in | about 54 sq ft |
Example: a 12 × 40 ft driveway at 6 inches is 12 × 40 × 6 ÷ 324 = about 9 yards. Order a little extra for compaction. The calculators do the math.
