What it is
24-inch cut bluestone stepping-stone pads, sold by the each. Square or round profile (we stock both — call to confirm which is on the yard today). Roughly 2 inches thick, ~150 pounds per piece. Natural bluestone is a hard, dense sedimentary stone with a tight grain and a cool gray-blue tone.
What it is for
Pathways across grass or mulched areas. Side-yard runs from front to back gate. Stepping stones through a flower bed. Anywhere you want a discrete walking surface that feels intentional but not as committed as a full poured walkway.
Common installs:
- Front-yard to back-yard side path. Six steppers along a 12-foot stretch of grass.
- Garden bed traverse. A line of steppers through a 200 sq ft bed so you can weed without trampling plants.
- Hose-bib and AC-unit access. Single stepper or pair so you don't have to tramp through mulch.
- Pool surround landing pads. Pair of steppers from house slab to pool deck.
How to space them
Adult walking pace is 24-28 inches per step. Set steppers at 24" center-to-center for the easiest walking rhythm. Test before you bed them in — place them on the ground, walk back and forth, adjust.

Install
The right way:
- Lay out steppers on grass at your chosen spacing.
- Cut around each stepper with a flat shovel — outline the shape.
- Lift the stepper, dig out 3-4 inches of soil, lay 2 inches of paver leveling sand.
- Set the stepper on the sand. Settle level with surrounding grade.
- Tamp soil/grass back around the edges.
Steppers set on a sand bed don't shift. Steppers set directly on dirt will sink unevenly within a season.
Bluestone vs flagstone steppers
We can cut Oklahoma flagstone into stepper-sized pieces if you want a tonal match to a sandstone patio. The advantages of true bluestone steppers:
- Uniform 24" size — easy spacing math.

Buying tips
- Heavy pieces — 150 lbs each. Bring two people or a dolly to pick up.
- Pre-purchase the sand. Steppers set on bare dirt will sink.
- Allow one extra stepper. Cuts and breakage on install are real.
