What it is

Arizona Buckskin flagstone — quarried sandstone with a warm tan base and rose-colored veining. 1 to 2 inches thick, sold by the ton. The premium-tier flagstone in our hardscape lineup. Sometimes called Arizona Rosa or Arizona Flag.

What it is for

Feature areas. This is not a "cover the whole back yard" stone — it is the stone you use when one area needs to be the star.

Common uses:

  • Fire-pit pads. Buckskin against a flame at dusk reads warm and intentional.
  • Entry landings. First impression of the front door. Buckskin elevates the whole house front.
  • Pool deck inlays. Standard flagstone around the pool, Buckskin as a 4x4 inset in the lounging area.
  • Outdoor kitchen islands and bar tops. Cut into smaller cap pieces.
  • Sample-board "wow" stone. Designers spec it when they need to win a presentation.

For full patios over 400 sq ft, Buckskin gets expensive. Most customers blend it with Oklahoma Multi-Color — Oklahoma for the bulk, Buckskin for the feature inset.

How much do I need

About 110 sq ft per ton at 1.5" thickness — slightly less coverage than Oklahoma because pieces are typically a touch thicker. Add 15% for cut waste:

Feature area Tons needed
30 sq ft entry landing 0.4 - 0.5
80 sq ft fire-pit pad 1
150 sq ft accent area 1.5 - 1.8
400 sq ft full patio 4 - 4.5

The flagstone patio wizard computes Buckskin in tons alongside leveling sand and polymeric.

Install notes

Same install pattern as Oklahoma — compacted limestone base, 1" leveling sand bed, lay stones, polymeric joint sand. The pieces are heavier per square foot than Oklahoma (averaging 80-130 lbs each at this thickness). Plan two-person handling.

Buckskin is a softer sandstone than Oklahoma. Don't drive vehicles on it. For pool decks and patios with foot traffic only, it's perfect. For driveways or anywhere vehicles park, use Oklahoma.

How it ages

Sandstone develops a subtle patina over the first year — colors deepen slightly, surface mineral salts make a faint white bloom that washes off with rain. Final color settles in by year two. Buckskin holds its rose-veined character indefinitely.

Buying tips

  • Sample before you commit. Drive out to the yard, look at a few pieces in daylight, compare to your house color.
  • Order 15% extra. Cuts and bad pieces happen — better to have leftover stones for repairs than to short the install.
  • Bookmark cut waste for stepping stones in the back yard. Don't throw it away.

Contractor notes

Limited stock — Buckskin pallets are 8-12 week lead times when we run out. Pre-book for spring installs by January.
