What it is

Red-tinted clay infield mix sold by the ton. Engineered for baseball and softball infields — a calibrated mix of clay, silt, and fine sand that holds shape, drains acceptably, and grades easily.

What it is for

Three main uses:

  • Sports field maintenance. Topping or rebuilding infields at schools, recreational leagues, and city parks. Standard for baseline paths, pitcher's mounds, batter's boxes, and base anchors.
  • Pickleball / tennis court base. For clay-surface court installs.
  • Riding ring or arena footing. For backyard horse arenas, mixed with sand at specific ratios for cushion.

Not for general landscape use. Infield clay won't support plant growth.

How much do I need

Field application Tons needed
Pitcher's mound rebuild 2-3
Home plate area 1
Full baseline (3 bases) 5-8
Whole infield refresh 25-50
Backyard riding ring (40x80) 20-30

For non-standard applications, call us — we can spec a delivery for your specific build.

Install notes (infield refresh)

  1. Scrape existing surface flat with a drag mat or rake.
  2. Spread clay in 1-2" lifts.
  3. Wet (don't flood) and compact with a hand tamper or roller.
  4. Drag to final grade.
  5. Mark with proper field paint.

For full rebuilds, plan the project around dry weather — infield clay turns into a slick mess in heavy rain mid-install.

Buying tips

  • Bulk delivery only — no minimum, but a single ton is the smallest unit.
  • Plan field installs around dry weather windows.
  • For backyard riding rings, combine with masonry sand at 60% sand / 40% clay for proper footing depth and cushion.
