What it is
Engineered wood fiber tested and certified to ASTM F1292 — the standard for fall-attenuation under playground equipment. Sold by the cubic yard. This is the structural product, not regular bagged mulch — it's sized, screened, and tested specifically for fall zones.
What it is for
Building a fall zone under residential or commercial playground equipment. If you have a swing set, monkey bars, slide, or any play structure that a kid could fall from, code in most municipalities (and most insurance carriers) requires either ASTM-certified mulch or rubber fall surface.
Specific uses:
- Residential swing-set fall zones
- Backyard play structures (forts, slides)
- Daycare and preschool outdoor play areas
- Commercial playground installs
- HOA common-area play areas
Why not regular mulch
ASTM F1292 mulch is tested to absorb impact at specified deck heights. Regular landscape mulch:
- Compacts unevenly
- Includes large chunks that can hurt on impact
- Has unpredictable fiber sizes that don't cushion consistently
- Is not certified — won't pass an insurance inspection or municipal review
The difference is real. A child falling 5 feet onto regular mulch vs onto ASTM F1292 is the difference between a bruise and a broken arm.
How deep — this matters
Fall zones need 9 to 12 inches of compacted depth. Yes, that much. The wood fiber compacts under use — what starts at 12" loose ends up at 9" compacted within a season. Plan accordingly.
| Deck height | Required loose mulch depth |
|---|---|
| 5 ft platform | 9" |
| 6 ft platform | 12" |
| 7+ ft platform | 12" + (consult equipment manufacturer) |
How much do I need
Calculate the fall zone area (typically 6 feet larger in each direction than the equipment footprint), multiply by depth:
| Fall zone size | Yards at 12" depth |
|---|---|
| 8x12 (96 sq ft) — typical swing set | 3.5 |
| 12x12 (144 sq ft) — small play structure | 5.5 |
| 16x16 (256 sq ft) — larger play set | 9.5 |
| 20x20 (400 sq ft) — commercial play area | 15 |
Install notes
- Excavate or contain the fall zone with steel edging — the mulch wants to migrate out the edges.
- Optionally lay woven landscape fabric underneath — slows weed pull-through and helps keep mulch from sinking into native soil.
- Spread mulch to full loose depth, then walk over it to begin compaction.
- Top up annually — wood fiber breaks down over 2-3 years and compaction reduces depth.
Buying tips
- Pre-order by Wednesday. We do not carry playground mulch in a standing pile — it's a special pull. Need a week's lead time minimum.
- Don't substitute "natural playground mulch" from a big-box store — those aren't always tested. If the bag does not say ASTM F1292 with a certification batch number, it is not playground mulch for fall-zone purposes.
- Plan annual top-up. Fall zones lose ~25% depth per year to compaction and decomposition.
Contractor notes
ASTM certificate available on request for permitting and insurance documentation. Tandem-load drops standard for commercial play-area installs.
