What it is
A 40-pound bag of granular iron-sulfate turf product. The "color shot" for warm-season lawns — gives Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine a deep blue-green color without the nitrogen push that makes you mow twice as often.
What it's for
Three common scenarios:
- You want color, not growth. It's late June, the lawn is functional but yellowing slightly. You don't want to add nitrogen because that means weekly mowing in 100° heat. Iron Plus greens it up for 2-4 weeks without driving growth.
- You suspect iron deficiency. Lawns on DFW's alkaline soils sometimes can't pull enough iron out of the soil even when iron is present. The high pH binds it up. Iron Plus is foliar/granular delivery that bypasses the soil pH issue.
- HOA inspection coming up. Need the lawn to look great in two weeks but don't want to commit to the weekly mowing of a full fertilizer push. Iron Plus is your friend.
How to apply
Granular: apply with a broadcast spreader at the rate on the bag (typically 4-5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft). Water in immediately. Color shift appears in 5-10 days.
For faster results, use a liquid iron product (different SKU — call us if you want a recommendation). Foliar liquids green up in 2-3 days.
| Lawn size | Bags per application |
|---|---|
| 2,000 sq ft | 1 (covers easily) |
| 5,000 sq ft | 1-2 |
| 10,000 sq ft | 2 |
You can apply iron 2-3 times a season without issue. Don't over-apply — at heavy rates iron will stain concrete and pavers (and your shoes).
Iron vs nitrogen
| Nitrogen (21-7-14) | Iron Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Yes, but slower | Yes, faster |
| Growth | Yes — more mowing | Minimal — no extra mowing |
| Frequency | 2x/year | Up to 3-4x/season |
| Cost per app | Moderate | Lower |
For routine turf nutrition: use 21-7-14 fertilizer in spring and fall. For color touch-ups in between: use Iron Plus.
Buying tips
- Iron can stain. Sweep granules off driveways, sidewalks, and pool decks before watering in. Don't apply right next to white limestone.
- Don't apply with shoes you care about. Iron-tinted shoes are a thing.
- Combine with a routine fertilizer schedule, don't replace it. Iron is for color; nitrogen is for the long-term health of the lawn.
