What it is
Recycled hardwood mulch treated with black iron-oxide pigment. Sold by the cubic yard. The boldest color-enhanced we carry — deep, sharp black that frames plants and hardscape with maximum contrast.
When black works
Black mulch is the modern-design pick. Best fits:
- Contemporary house palettes — white-and-black trim, charcoal stucco, modern angular hardscape.
- Light hardscape contrast — white limestone walkways, light concrete pavers, pale stone. Black mulch sets them off.
- Ornamental and silver foliage — agave, yucca, silver santolina, ornamental grasses. Black framing makes them pop.
- Pool surrounds with white concrete decks. Black mulch reads sophisticated.
- Pool equipment areas. Hides chlorine bleach drips that show on brown mulches.
Where black fights:
- Under leafy trees with heavy fall leaf-drop — the contrast with brown leaves is jarring; you'll be raking constantly to keep the look.
- Against red-brick traditional homes — too stark for most tastes.
- In deep shade — black-on-black reads heavy. Use natural mulch in shade.
How color-enhanced black ages
UV fade is more visible on black than on red or brown — because pure black has no underlying brown tone to fall back to. Expect:
- 0-3 months: sharp jet-black
- 3-6 months: dark brown-black
- 6-12 months: medium dark brown
The good news: black ages into a still-acceptable dark brown. Color-enhanced black at 12 months is comparable to Saddle Brown at 6 months.
For sharp-black year-round, plan a partial top-dress every spring. Most customers find the natural fade acceptable and only re-mulch annually.
How much do I need
Same math as all our mulches — 100 sq ft per yard at 3" depth:
| Bed size | Yards needed |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 1 |
| 200 sq ft | 2 |
| 500 sq ft | 5 |
The mulch-bed wizard bundles mulch + fabric + edging.
Trade-offs vs alternatives
- Black vs hardwood: hardwood ages to silver-gray; black ages to medium brown. Pick by the look you want at year one, not the look at year three.
- Black vs red: black is contemporary, red is traditional. Look at the house first.
- Black vs brown: brown is the safer all-purpose choice; black is the design statement.
Buying tips
- Heat absorption: black mulch holds slightly more heat than light-colored mulch. Not enough to damage plants, but in mid-summer noon a black-mulched bed will be 5-10° warmer at the surface.
- Use landscape fabric underneath — weed pull-throughs are most visible against black.
- Install dry. Wet black mulch handling can stain hands and clothes.
- For pool decks, choose color-enhanced over poured concrete dye for cooler surface temps.
